![]() ![]() ![]() Although ultimately, the story unfolds in a way that clarifies its events, I was never quite able to overcome the feeling that I was missing something important. From the start I felt a bit lost, trying to keep track of characters and never feeling anchored in the narrative. Which, all sounds well and good and a promising premise, but this novel meanders from one thing to the next, without every really honing in on what story it’s telling. Told through the point of view of Zari, a young wife and mother from a middle-class, landowning family, who struggles to maintain her family life under external and internal pressures. I researched writers, read reviews and even asked around for recommendations, before ultimately selecting Savushun by Simin Daneshvar (pictured below), the first novel written by an Iranian woman.įor that reason I was disappointed not to enjoy this book more. Set in Shiraz (“ the city of flowers and nightingales“) in the latter stages of the Second World War, at which time Iran is under occupation by the allies, this novel tells of the inner workings of an Iranian family. ![]() I put some effort into choosing a book for Iran. ![]()
