![]() ![]() ![]() Although ultimately, the story unfolds in a way that clarifies its events, I was never quite able to overcome the feeling that I was missing something important. From the start I felt a bit lost, trying to keep track of characters and never feeling anchored in the narrative. Which, all sounds well and good and a promising premise, but this novel meanders from one thing to the next, without every really honing in on what story it’s telling. Told through the point of view of Zari, a young wife and mother from a middle-class, landowning family, who struggles to maintain her family life under external and internal pressures. I researched writers, read reviews and even asked around for recommendations, before ultimately selecting Savushun by Simin Daneshvar (pictured below), the first novel written by an Iranian woman.įor that reason I was disappointed not to enjoy this book more. ![]() I began listening today, thinking perhaps a book actually written by Andrews (and not Neiderman-blah) might redeem Ross as a narrator in my ears. She hardly does any voices to begin with, but she whines along as though it's okay for an audiobook narrator to read the book without the tiniest bit of performance in her voice. ![]() ![]() Andrews’s books (or should I say Andrew Neiderman books) and found myself irritated by her high-school student drone. I've listened to her readings of other V.C. Andrews early work! When I saw that Rebekkah Ross was the narrator, my leaping heart just about om disappointment. When I saw that "My Sweet Audrina" was finally available as an audiobook, my heart leapt! Such a fantastic book deserves to be on audio, as does the rest of V.C. I'm changing my one star rating of the performance to three stars. It's still not great and her mispronunciation of words still bothers me, but it's easier to handle this time around. ![]() Maybe having prepared myself for Rebekkah Ross's lackluster performance makes it easier to bear. Down Among the Sticks and Bones is still my very favorite of the five books, and I really enjoyed Come Tumbling Down, but for me, it didn’t have quite the focus or emotional impact that I was hoping for. Seanan McGuire continues her magical portal series with this fifth novella which is more or less a direct sequel to Down Among the Sticks and Bones, so if you aren’t caught up with that book in particular, you should not dive into Come Tumbling Down first. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I received this book for free from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review. ![]() ![]() Such products have PAO (period after opening) sign to clarify how long can you use the products once you opened them.
